This was scene on Friday evening after a motorist ploughed into the Big Kids store in Clinton Place. The elderly couple inside the silver Peugeot escaped unharmed. No-one was in the shop when the accident happened at around 7.40pm. Shop owner Doug Cockcroft said the driver of the car had been involved in a minor accident at the roundabout, in Station Approach, and was then believed to have accelerated into the shop.

Extensive damage was caused forcing the shop to close just as it was gearing up for the Christmas shopping season. Mr Cockcroft said: 'The front of the car was in the shop, there was lots of damage to the window, carpets and stock, plus there is the loss of business, it couldn't have happened at a worse time.'

However, he was relieved no-one was hurt. 'People are always looking in the shop window, fortunately there was nobody standing there when it happened,' he added.
