Cardboard recycling - Rother still seeking an answer

ROTHER is still seeking a means of recycling cardboard, council leader Cllr Carl Maynard has assured a resident who asked why it can't follow Wealden's example.

Via the Ask The Leader slot on the www.rother.gov.uk website, the questioner asked: "The local authority that serves Polegate solves its public cardboard recycling by allowing residents to put cardboard in their green waste bin and sent for composting.

"Why can't that system be adopted in our area?"

The leader said: "Wealden District Council serves Polegate communities and introduced mixed garden waste and cardboard collections in partnership with a commercial composter in Isfield some years ago.

"Naturally, we looked at the possibilities of providing a similar arrangement in Rother but for capacity and cost reasons we were obliged to seek another composting facility 'nearer to home'.

"We were extremely disappointed that no facility is prepared to accept card mixed with green garden waste in our area.

"However our garden waste is put to extremely good use at Pebsham, where it is composted as soil conditioner for the restoration of the landfill site to create the new Pebsham Country Park, but card is not accepted by the operator.

"We are very aware of the public demand for card to be included in the recycling scheme and our work continues to identify suitable disposal routes and methods of collection."
