Care home appeals for period items

A BEXHILL care home is appealing for vintage period clothes and household items to help create a nostalgia area for residents.

Staff at Richmond Methodist Home for the Aged in Collington Road East, which was recently refurbished, hope the planned reminiscence area will help residents suffering from dementia.

Jan Wilkins, activities co-ordinator at the home, said: “ It is now widely recognised that providing such an area, where residents can relax with familiar things around them, promotes their well-being and calmness in what can sometimes be a stressful environment.

“If anyone can help, by trawling through their attic or garden shed for any household items or clothes from the 40s, 50s or 60s and would like them to go to a good home then please contact me.”

Alternatively Jan said people are welcome to pop along for a coffee and a chat at their monthly coffee mornings – including home-made cakes - held at the home on the third Thursday of every month, 10.30-12.30; the next one being January 20.

The home is also appealing for volunteers both within the home and mini-bus drivers to take residents on regular weekly outings.

Jan said: “I see Richmond moving on and forging links with the community. Asking local people for donations and appealing for volunteers is the first step towards that.”
