WHATEVER they think of their job, for good or ill, railway staff still had time to remember others going through tough times, as they filled in their annual employee survey.

Many workers with train operator Southern took up the suggestion to make a £1 donation to one of three charities, including Winston’s Wish, the childhood bereavement charity.

It was nominated by Ben Read, Southern’s train care depot manager at Littlehampton, who was delighted that the charity received an impressive £901, to help fund an accident and illness group at Brinsbury, near Pulborough, next spring.

Ben said he was well aware of the practical support and guidance Winston’s Wish gave to families, professionals and anyone concerned about a bereaved child, and felt that the support offered, especially if the bereavement resulted from a railway fatality, deserved more recognition.

He said: “I’m delighted Winston’s Wish has benefitted in this way. Every single penny counts for this amazing charity and I know the money donated by Southern will be well spent on supporting those who require assistance at such an emotional time.”

Louise Brown, community and events fundraiser at Winston’s Wish, thanked Southern ‘for making a huge difference to our work’.
