Car's engine destroyed after vehicle bursts into flames

A car was badly damaged after it caught fire on the A23 near Gatwick Airport this afternoon (Wednesday January 13).

Two fire engines from Crawley were called to the incident near the North Terminal roundabout at about 5.10pm.

The driver had pulled over onto the hard shoulder due to the fire, which is believed to have originated in the engine.

Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and a hose reel to tackle the flames.

The engine was destroyed in the fire.
