Cars to pay for Downs parking

THE National Trust will be making a charge for parking at six of its South Downs car parks from the spring.

For visitors who are not members of the National Trust, there will be a 2 daily charge at Harting Down, Petworth Park and Devil's Dyke in West Sussex and Crowlink, Birling Gap and Ditchling Beacon in East Sussex.

National Trust members and volunteers will enjoy free parking and a season ticket costing 25 will be available for regular visitors.

The Trust hopes the charges will raise 175,000 a year although it is hard to give any accurate predictions.

Diana Owen, area manager, said: 'Car park charging is already established at some of our Surrey sites and experience has shown that those who enjoy walking in the countryside appreciate that it does not come for free and are happy to make a contribution.'
