Cash boosts National Coastwatch Institution in Newhaven

SEAFORD Mayor Bob Allen presented NCI Coastwatch with a cheque for £1,580 after fundraising for the group for the last year.

He has been holding events in support of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) and the Citizens Advice Bureau in Seaford.

Bob handed over the money to the group on Monday May 9.

Bob said: “As an NCI watchkeeper myself I am keen to help in any way I can. The NCI keeps watch along the coast and reports to, and works with, HM Coastguard and all other emergency services.

“It is a registered charity and manned entirely by highly trained volunteers who cover a total of around 3,700 hours watchkeeping every year at Newhaven lookout alone.”

Cllr Allen was a founding member of NCI Newhaven which began in 2004.

The chairman of NCI Newhaven, Ann Abbott, added: “This is a wonderful sum of money which will go towards obtaining new optics to assist in our observation activities. The Newhaven lookout costs over £5,000 a year to run and we have to raise all funds ourselves at local level.

“We are grateful to our colleague, Bob Allen, for his magnificent fundraising efforts over the last year.”

The NCI is a national organisation which relies entirely upon trained volunteers to man 44 lookouts around the coast of the UK.

Watchkeepers contribute to the search and rescue services throughout the country.
