Cash stolen in transit?

Readers are advised to use caution if sending financial gifts by post.

Last Monday, in West Street Post Office, I posted my niece a birthday card containing a 10 note.

Despite the first-class stamp it took two days to travel the eight miles to Selsey and arrived torn open and with the money missing.

Of course it is vaguely possible the envelope could have been damaged in transit but it was a sturdy envelope, well-sealed and looks to have been opened by hand.

I am therefore sad to assume the money was in fact stolen in transit. I do hope whoever took it enjoys spending a four-year-old girl's birthday money.
