Castles in the Littlehampton sand

Hundreds of children gathered outside the East Beach Cafe to take part in a sandcastle competition, organised by Littlehampton Town Council.

There were more than 200 entries, the first 50 of whom were given a free ice cream by the cafe.

Professional sand sculptor Mark Anderson, who learnt the trade from his grandfather on Weymouth beach, was also there, and created a lobster for the children to use as inspiration.

Winner of the under-fives class was Emily Twinn-Dorie, four, who worked with her family to create a "sand witch", complete with flowing seaweed hair and broom. Asked if she had enjoyed the event, she nodded furiously.

Ella Jones and Ruby Griffiths created an island with a whole forest of seaweed trees which netted them the under-11s group.

The over-11s category was won by 13 and 14-year-olds Sheymron and Cienna Edwards, Lauren Howland and Mariah Irvine, who worked together to created a rather happy-looking cow, with stones for patches and seaweed for grass.
