WI: Thursday 6th April will be the 99th birthday party meeting of the Catsfield WI. It will start at the summer time of 2.30pm in the Village Hall. There is a change of speaker as Ken Pollock runs an over 65 football team and they have got into a final! We generously forgive him for deserting us and look forward to the talented Peter Willson, who will entertain us with his musical skills 'Off the Cuff'. It should be fun with a birthday tea provided by the Committee.

Jumble Sale: The huge total of £370 was raised at the WI Jumble Sale last Saturday. Thanks in part to some good publicity in this paper and by word of mouth, we had 73 buyers come to the sale. The trend appears to be the fashion stalls are not so well stocked, but bric-a-brac took £52 and refreshments £75. There were some good items in household goods and the sale culminated in an auction of a child’s mountain bike generously given, which raised £5. Very many thanks to all who brought goods to the sale, came to buy and to our energetic and talented WI members who made some superb cakes and worked extremely hard. Jumble Sales are short and hectic, but great fun.

Family Service: On Mothering Sunday last week the Family Parade Service at St Laurence Church was packed with children, parents and grandparents until there was hardly an empty seat in the building. There were many representatives of the scouting movement, both children and leaders and the flag bearers proudly carried their colours to be placed beside the altar for the duration of the service. Father Michael explained that he was wearing one of his scouting scarves although it wasn’t really a part of his church ‘uniform’. The school choir accompanied by Lucy Ashton on a keyboard sang a delightful song about mothers on this special day.

Once again Harold, the church cat made an appearance and there were plenty of volunteers to look after him as usual. We heard that Harold, being a very religious cat, had given up cream and smoked salmon for Lent but was now feeling extremely hungry. He happened to meet three characters from the Bible and they all paused to tell him their various stories of God feeding them in their hunger, which he was pleased to hear about but it still left him feeling pretty peckish. Fortunately Father Michael came and found him and explained that it was not only Mothering Sunday, but it was also ‘Refreshment Sunday’, meaning that it was halfway through Lent and just for today, the rules were relaxed and he could have his favourite treats, so eventually Harold was wearing a happy cat’s smile.

Many baskets of spring posies were brought from in front of the altar for the excited children to distribute to their mothers and all the ladies in the church. Coffee and biscuits were served at the end of a very happy Family service on a beautiful spring morning.
