Lots of news from the Playing Field this week: The most immediate being Catsfield School's sports day today at 1.30pm, everyone is welcome to come along and watch the fun and efforts they all put in. This is followed by the now-traditional cricket match between the school team and the cricket club. The match will start at 5.30ish and both teams are keen to take part in what will be Jonathan Elm's last fixture as Deputy Head of the School before he moves on. We wish him well.

Saturday a Bexhill team is playing a league match on the field, followed on Sunday by our village team’s fixture against another Bexhill side. Three wickets are having to be prepared by our volunteer groundsman who will also be involved in helping at the Queen’s birthday lunch in support of the WI and then, of course, watching England play their first Euro match on the television, if he is still awake.

The Church fund-raising team: held a Boot Sale on the field last Saturday, when the excellent sum of £466 was raised. There were 20 booters and lots of buyers to purchase items from the Church stall where Anita, Pip and Thelma made£90. Brenda, Jane and Pauline ran a busy refreshment kitchen totalling £125. Well done to Sandra Shoobridge and her team. Their next event is a prom-style evening in September.

There will be an evensong at the Church on Sunday 12th June at 6pm to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, followed by a special cake and celebration drink.

Just for once: there was a lovely summer’s day at Eastbourne on Sunday when the cricketers played Southbourne in a thrilling draw. They batted first and got 183 for 8 on their enormous ground in 45 overs. Our wicket takers were Tom Bristow-Diamond finishing 1 for 41, Andy Williams 1 for 19, Connor Earl 2 for 26 with Tim Pitman and Derek Longley getting one wicket each. Two players were run out as they scrambled to get more runs before tea. Unfortunately, time only allowed us 40 overs but we finished at close of play with 180 also for 8 wickets. Top scorer was A Jay with 43, Derek Longley 25 and some huge hitting and heroic running by Sean Tottman, who saved the day with 30 runs. Honours were even.

Our two stoolball teams: report no losses yet, with a win against Roberstbridge. 16th June the mixed team play away at Brightling.

The WI meeting: was our fun, flower and produce show, which turned out to be extremely well supported. It took judges Janet, Joan and Malcolm Moss a long time to judge all the entries and the winner was Ann Clegg, closely followed by Frances Hansom and Victoria Crawshaw. There were 12 entries for the Victoria Sponge category, which is a popular, but difficult thing to do perfectly. After the lunch to celebrate the Queen’s birthday, there will be a lull in proceedings until the July meeting and outing, the first stop of which is to visit Birling Gap - we hope it is still there.
