Catsfield

WI: The next meeting of Catsfield WI will be at 2.30pm in Catsfield Village Hall on Thursday next, 2nd June and will feature the annual '˜Fun, Flower and Produce Show'. This is always full of interest and fun, especially following the judging when members have the opportunity to see all the exhibits and who the winners might be. Beryl has prepared one of her quizzes to keep everyone amused whilst the judging takes place and until it's time for viewing and tea. Don't forget to bring your entries on the day and good luck to you all! There may also be an opportunity to add your name and that of a guest to the list for the celebration lunch for the 90th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen on Saturday 11th June, if you haven't already done so.

Sussex Air Ambulance: The Green was the centre of a visit from the Air Ambulance last week when it was called to provide back-up for a potentially difficult home birth. Thankfully it was not needed and a baby boy was safely delivered, but it reminds us that the Air Ambulance is the chosen charity of the Catsfield WI for two years. Last year £1,000 was handed over and fund-raising is continuing.

Coffee Morning: The Coffee Morning last Saturday made the grand total of £312 to raise money for the Parish Church of St Laurence. It was another happy village occasion and Sandra would like to thank everyone who helped and made donations towards its success.

Car Boot Sale: The next fundraising occasion for the church will be a Car Boot Sale to be held at the Playing Field next Saturday week, on 4th June from 8.30am for stall holders and 9am – 11.30am for buyers. The cost will be £7 for cars, £10 for vans and 50p for browsers. Hot and cold refreshments will be available, so come along, grab some bargains and a bacon buttie from the pavilion and help raise money for the church.

Sport: Little to report regarding the cricket this week as we were due to play Parkhurst on the Downs on Sunday, but they were unable to field a team. What a pity to waste the opportunity of fielding alongside the A259 dreading the ball being hit across the road, waiting for the thump as it hits a passing car and then dodging the traffic trying to retrieve the ball. We play Sedlescombe on Sunday at home where no such problems exist, just the wind whistling through the poplar trees and the birdsong. Bexhill risked the threat of rain and got in a full league match on our pitch on Saturday when they won.

The ladies stoolball team beat Pett away in the week. There is a mixed team playing Staplecross at home on 31st May and we play Hooe on 2nd June also at home.

Farming News: If you look carefully at the wheat fields around the area, you might notice that it looks very tall, but that is the dreaded black grass. We know of some crops which have had to be destroyed, to prevent the weed seeding and spreading. Perhaps it was the wet winter which has made this weed into such a problem this year. The rape flowers are dying off, so then the plants will be producing the tiny black seeds, which are harvested to be made into oil.

When the junior school pupils came down from London for a visit to the village a couple of months ago, they took away some wheat seed together with instructions. It is now growing in a raised bed in a playground in Kingston-upon-Thames. We are awaiting a request for a combine harvester to trundle up the A21 to harvest the crop!
