Flower Festival: Plans are well in hand for the St Laurence Church Flower Festival taking place over the three days of the bank holiday weekend (23rd, 24th & 25th August) The theme is ‘A Work of Art’ and it will be most interesting to see the various interpretations of this in the many displays on view. As well as the floral art, there will be the added attractions of Plant, Craft, Bric-a-Brac, Book and Home Produce stalls and contributions to all these will be most gratefully received. The Festival will be open from 10am – 5pm on Saturday and Monday and from 11am – 5pm on Sunday. Entrance will be £1.50 and there will be Coffee, Lunches and Teas available to buy. There will be a concert on the Saturday evening at 7pm featuring Lucy Ashton, tickets cost £5 on the door and a Choral Evensong will take place at 5pm on the Sunday.

WI Garden Meeting: This month’s WI meeting took the form of a garden party held at the home of Beryl, our secretary. Gazebo’s, tables and chairs were spread around the lawn in her delightful garden and the sun shone gloriously throughout the afternoon, in spite of a brief isolated shower not long before everyone arrived. A quiz had us all racking our brains for answers and although it was for individual competition, it was noted that some cheating and comparing of answers was taking place! Tea was prepared and served by the committee and followed by a raffle to raise money for our charity of the year, Demelza Hospice Care. Everyone enjoyed a pleasant and relaxed summer’s afternoon amongst friends and many thanks go to our hosts Beryl and David.

Songs of Praise: Last Sunday’s ‘Songs of Praise’, held in the Parish Church to celebrate St Laurence’s Day was well attended and thirteen hymns requested by members of the congregation were sung with great enthusiasm, interspersed with readings. Tea and homemade cakes were served afterwards and donations were requested towards the fund to aid the appalling plight of thousands of Christian refugees fleeing death and persecution in Iraq.

Sports News: Unfortunately because of the weather there is very little sporting news. Cricket was cancelled on Sunday in view of the weather forecast, but we did manage the first friendly football fixture, which resulted in a 3 - 1 victory over Hollington. All the boys are keen and raring to go and with only one team playing this season, it eases the pressure on keeping the pitch fit for the whole season. I suppose on another sporting topic, news of a neighbour in Henley Down catching a homing pigeon in his garden some days ago. He photographed its ring and found that it is based in Antwerp, so rang the owner who was distraught as it was his best pigeon. It had been let go in Poitiers, France but somehow ended up in Catsfield. For several days it was fed on rice and water and then one day left with no “thank you” message. Unbelievably it turned up several days later in Antwerp to everyone’s delight and amazement.
