Rother Community Choir and St Laurence Church Choir will be performing. Guest artists include Lucy Ashton who will be singing, ‘Waites and Measures’ are also performing, as well as Catsfield Junior Choir and Ella Andrew. Olly March will be playing two pieces on the violin. Light refreshments are included in the ticket price of £6.

Unable to get accreditation to attend the World Cup on your behalf, our Sports Correspondent managed to find herself on holiday in France without a television. This was extremely fortunate as it turned out, because we were spared the embarrassment of watching England’s dismal performances. Instead we had to endure the jubilation of the French themselves and very jolly Dutch supporters!

We returned to Catsfield to the cricketers’ victory over Crowhurst away on Saturday. The home side were 170 for 4 at tea, with Nick Gurr’s bowling figures of 2 for 45 and John Gardiner 2 for 26, supplemented by two splendid catches by Nigel Champion, who also batted well for 42 in our winning total of 174 for 2. James Wilson scored an unbeaten 74. There was a flurry at the end for Martin Gurr who had the ruby wedding anniversary party of ex-footballer Brian Harman and his wife Judy, to attend at the Netherfield Arms. A great occasion superbly handled by The Arms, a thoroughly recommended pub.

Earlier in the day the sun shone for the school fete, much enjoyed by children and the village generally, which has always supported the school and of whom we are very proud. The rules were “adjusted” in the tug of war, but the purpose of that game seemed to be to shout loudly and eventually fall down! The teas were wonderful, there were lots of stalls to enjoy and at the end, some of us were amused by the eccentric running of the tombola - it will be different at the village fete when John and Pauline Putland run it! The bake-off competition was very popular and games such as the coconut shy and the racing cars were very busy. There was a superb cake stall, wonderful plants, and pony rides for the more adventurous.

I see from the Observer that all the villages are holding such events and you just marvel at the large number of volunteers any village needs for the sports teams, the PTA, WI, Village Hall, social club, horticultural society and of course the Parish Council. Compared to the dearth of activities in most French villages, English villages are second to none.
