Catsfield

Christian Aid week starts on Sunday 12th May and will focus this year on partners working to build peace amid conflict in South Sudan, Columbia and Iraq. The popular Coffee Morning and Plant Sale for Christian Aid will be held in Catsfield Village Hall on Saturday 17th May from 10am – 12 noon and donations of plants, cakes and raffle prizes will be gratefully received. There is always a rush by gardeners to grab a bargain on the plant stall so be sure to get there early. To find out where your money goes visit www.christianaid.org.uk

Despite the best efforts of everyone during the week, the first cricket match due to have been played last Sunday could not be played owing to the pitch being too wet. The ball did not bounce off the wicket and water was still oozing out when the roller was used. So often the first match of the season is cancelled because the weather is inclement but it is always a shame to lose a game on a sunny day. We will try again this Sunday when we hope to play Ashburnham at home 2pm. The last football match is due to be played tomorrow when the seconds play Tackleway.

Last Thursday the WI met for their resolutions meeting, which featured a lively discussion on encouraging people to sign up for organ donation. The President will support the resolution when she represents Catsfield, Ashburnham, Crowhurst and Saxonwood WIs at the annual meeting in Leeds. It was interesting to hear how the UK lags behind in this field, even though we lead the world in lots of medical research and transplantation techniques have overcome many of the initial problems. It is customary after all the intellectual concentration to end the meeting with something a bit lighter and you can’t get much lighter than three games of bingo, with our reserve caller Beryl taking the stage. There are lots of opportunities offered to members for the summer with trips to Goodwood, Kew Gardens, courses and walks, the first of which is on 12th May meeting at 10 am in the Village Hall car park to take our annual trip up Broomham Lane to see Anne and Terry’s garden in Normanhurst. Scrabblers meet on 15th May. Members are asked to return their flower show schedules to Margaret Phillips as soon as possible. Gwen has distributed the bulb lists, so these will have to be returned soon.

It is with much sadness that I will be moving from Henley Down Cottage on Wednesday 14th May after thirty-one truly happy years in this lovely place. However, I’m excited that I am going to live in my mother’s former home in Bexhill and I’m having great fun making changes to her lovely bungalow and making it my own. I shall still keep up with all the activities that I enjoy so much in this very special community – just from a little further away. I have sought a general opinion as to whether I should continue to write the Catsfield Village Voice when I no longer live here and everyone asked has said that I should – probably because no-one else wants to do it! If anyone from the village would like to take it over I will willingly step down but otherwise I am happy to continue.
