August bank holiday is early this year and its only two weeks to the next fund raising event for the parish church of St Laurence. On Saturday 7th September there will be a Quiz Night in the Village Hall at 7.30pm, the theme will be ‘Music and Pictures’. Tickets costing £5 each are available from the Village Stores and although refreshments will be available, it is also suggested that you bring your own nibbles.

Don’t forget to hand over your favourite recipes for ‘The St Laurence Church Recipe Book’ by the end of September to Sandra or Linda and share them with the rest of the village.

Ann Davey, our sports correspondent writes - Unfortunately, despite the wonderful summer weather ideal for cricket, we lost another fixture on Sunday against Newenden, when neither village could raise a full team. We are hoping we can play Parkhurst at home on Saturday, although Saturdays are always the more difficult fixtures to meet. At present there is only one fixture left and then the season is over.

On Saturday the first football team played the seconds in a charity match to honour the memory of Andy Gurr. The first team won 5 - 1 and afterwards the rain held off to enable an enjoyable barbecue and a few beers. There were plenty of families up at the field to watch and it was good to see the children running around, like they do.

Just a postscript to Jill’s remarks last week about dog mess on the Playing Field, every time there is a sports fixture on, someone has to go around the pitch with a shovel to remove the mess. This is not fair and could be a health hazard to children in particular. Something has to be done.

On Sunday afternoon a couple of WI members visited Butlers Farmhouse in Herstmonceux under the National Garden Scheme, it was a lovely garden with views across to the Downs. Irene Wilson, who runs the NGS in this part of the world, was the hostess and her husband Peter, who is a marvellous pianist, led the music making. Irene is coming to the WI next March to show slides of the various gardens and Peter is coming to the meeting in December to play for us and we are really looking forward to hearing “Pop Meets Classical Music”. Just a reminder that there are lots more gardens to visit, so do get a brochure and have look.
