Don’t forget the two village events taking place tomorrow, Saturday 15th June! The Car Boot Sale will be held at the playing field from 8am until 12noon to raise funds for St Laurence Church. The church also will be having its own pitch on the day and any donations of items to sell will be much appreciated.

Then tomorrow afternoon the WI will be holding the Strawberry Tea event in the Village Hall from 3pm until 5pm. The cost is £4 and £2 for children and there will be a cake stall too. The proceeds from this delicious occasion will raise money for Demelza Hospice Care for Children.

The WI meeting on Thursday 6th June was the ‘Fun Flower and Produce Show’ where members had the opportunity to exhibit their cookery, flower arranging and handicraft skills in fun competition with each other in fifteen various classes. The meeting started at 2.30pm, with Thora standing in for our President Ann, who had had a late return from holiday the previous night. After a rousing singing of Jerusalem and the usual business, Sarah announced that the next ramble will be on 18th June and will include a visit to an open garden at Hooe, members should meet in the car park at 10.15 for the drive to Hooe. Volunteers were invited to help with the Strawberry Teas and to contribute scones and cakes.

Beryl had arranged one of her popular quizzes to fill in the time whilst the judges assessed the show exhibits. Tea was announced and the opportunity for us to see the individual results of the competition. There was a good display of entries in all classes and the overall winners will be announced at the next meeting on 4th July at 2.30pm. Our speaker will be Judith Kinnison Bourke who will tell us about Elsie Bowerman, a survivor of the Titanic. The competition will be for an arrangement depicting the seaside and a motto is needed for the 2014 programme.

Ann Davey, Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Committee writes –

We are pleased to announce that we have permission to put a small garden on the verge at The Green very close to the Catsfield sign and we hope that soon everyone from Catsfield and those who pass through the village, will be able to enjoy the welcoming sight of shrubs and flowers. The existing planting around the sign will also be looked after and during the winter months the bedding plants will be changed to brighten up the garden. There will also be a major planting of daffodils along the verge for the spring. Helena Kicinski is responsible for the design and planting, using Great Park Farm to supply most of the plants and the hard landscaping will be undertaken by Jon Avery. The aim is to use the money we made from the Jubilee celebrations in a way which will provide enjoyment for everyone and encourage those who pass through to slow down and respect our village.

Catsfield cricket team played at home against Southbourne last Saturday and despite Martin Gurr getting over 70 runs, including one of his spectacular sixes over the pavilion, we lost. Sunday 16th June we play Sidley at home, so we hope for a better result.
