Catsfield

Jill Jarrett, Henley Down Cottage

Sadly yet again the football was cancelled last Saturday and surely there is no need to explain why! The fixture might have been transferred from Hawkhurst to Catsfield, but our pitch was too wet. In the old days the criteria for assessing whether the pitch was suitable without going into the Playing Field was to see if there were ducks on the field by Horns Corner, but nowadays with the new drainage it is not so clear cut. The half an inch of rain on Friday night/Saturday just topped up the level.

Farming has feared as badly and apart from looking after the animals it has not been possible to do any ground work. Logs and the cutting of Christmas trees around the village sites has been undertaken, sometimes in pouring rain.

Walking up Broomham Lane there were the sounds of water rushing out of the fields into the ditches, the springs in full bore and looking up, the sight of a young deer springing across the track, made it a memorable walk.
