The latest update from Patricia and Peter in Exmouth is that they moved into their lovely new home on Thursday 11th October, just four months after their move from Catsfield and will be ready to welcome visitors in the New Year!

About 50+ people from Catsfield and Crowhurst attended the tea party held in the Village Hall last Sunday for Ted Farrington, as well as June and Ted’s children and grandchildren. It was a small public thank you for his years as a Lay Reader at the church and for all his love and support to the community for many years prior to that. Father Michael thanked him and made a presentation of a cheque and a card, with a lovely basket of flowers presented to June. Lindy Butters presented him with two cards and many thanks on behalf of the children from Catsfield and Crowhurst village schools and Ted made witty speech in reply in his own inimitable manner. A huge and delicious tea was served and everyone enjoyed a lovely cake made by Valerie Mighall.

Elaine and Ann managed to find the only dry, sunny morning in the week to plant bulbs and spread 20 sacks of horse manure over the Village Hall garden, thanks to a local vet who donated some of his matured stock for the purpose. The garden has been tidied up and the special Jubilee petunias removed. They were magnificent when they weren’t wet, but it was a difficult year for bedding plants as we know.

A difficult planting season has been made worse by the wet conditions of the past weeks while local farmers contemplate having to abandon planting acres of winter wheat and all of the field beans, making the next few days crucial. This situation is duplicated all over the country and some areas are worse than Sussex, so it bodes ill for next year’s harvest.

Three local farmers found employment this weekend, however, rescuing the traders, combatants and visitors to Battle Abbey. Unfortunately, the re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings on its anniversary weekend had to be cancelled, but hundreds of heavy vehicles had to be towed on, around and off the site. Good humour prevailed with the occasional gift of a Dutch cheese, French cider and German wine, supplemented by chocolate bars for the tractor drivers!

Our football team battled on a sticky Mountfield pitch only to lose 4 - 0 and although it rained, blew and hailed at Catsfield, the afternoon at Mountfield was dry. We hope for better results on Saturday when they play Battle Baptists away in the Hastings Junior Cup, come on boys!

If anyone has any event or news that is Catsfield related and that they would like to have included in the Village Voice, please email me at [email protected] or telephone 01424 830403
