Last Friday’s ‘Evening of Song’ at St Laurence Church was well attended and was a most enjoyable evening of music and song.

The Rother Community Choir entertained the audience, accompanied on the piano, there were some excellent solo performances and also songs from the combined Catsfield and Crowhurst Church Choirs. The star performer of the evening however was church choirmaster Bob Andrew’s eleven year old granddaughter Ellie Andrew, who gave solo performances accompanied by Bob on the piano and the audience erupted with enthusiastic applause.

Sandra Shewbridge organised the delicious refreshments and drinks and everyone had very pleasant evening, whilst helping to boost church funds.

The Communion service on Sunday at St Laurence Church will be at the usual time of 9.15 am.

Friday week, the 28th September is a big day for your diary! First is Gwen’s famous Coffee Morning raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, which will be held at her home at Glebe Cottages from 9am – 12noon. Her incredible meringues alone are well worth the visit! But it’s also a great opportunity to meet up with old friends for coffee, whilst raising money for this worthy charity.

From there, a quick dash down the road to the Village Hall for the last Lunch Club of the month, with the raffle where everyone brings and wins a prize! Numbers are dwindling a little and more diners are needed to come and join in for a delicious home-cooked lunch costing only £3 and great company too. It would be so sad to see this weekly event cancelled for lack of support, so come along and give it a try and bring your friends!

Then home for a rest before back to the Village Hall at 7.30pm for an evening of music and fun provided by the ‘Classic Buskers’. Their musical virtuosity and entertaining humour are guaranteed to amuse and delight you and tickets are available now from Catsfield Stores at £8 each (children and over 60’s £5) Refreshments will be available. Phew! Who says nothing ever happens in Catsfield?

Last week’s WI meeting was the first after the summer break and the lovely August garden tea party at the home of our treasurer in Powdermill Lane. After singing ‘Jerusalem’ and all the usual formalities had taken place, instead of listening to a guest speaker, the meeting was open to members to bring any memorabilia with royal connections and to tell us about any memories of meeting or seeing the royal family. There were a few pieces of memorabilia but once we all started reminiscing, most of us recalled some item or memory that was long forgotten that we had lurking either at home or in the back of our minds and a lively discussion evolved. There were many memories of the coronation, royal weddings and funerals and stories of several close encounters with members of the royal family. It made for a very pleasant afternoon when we all learnt a little more about each other and we were ready for the usual outstanding WI tea before the meeting closed with drawing the raffle.

The East Sussex Mobile Library will make its usual fortnightly visit to the village tomorrow, Saturday 15th September when it will be parked outside the Village Hall from 4.15pm – 4.45pm.

The cricket season ended with an anti-climax. Unfortunately, we were unable to field a team for the Battle tournament on Saturday. It was a very difficult season with the weather spoiling a good fixture list, but as usual we look forward to next year. A list of results will be published next week, but in the meantime thanks are due to Mike for looking after the wicket assisted by Martin and Sean, to the Cook family for organising the teams, doing the teas and providing scorers, other tea ladies and all the players for continuing an important village sporting tradition.

On Sunday 16th September the Bayeux Bowman are hiring the playing field for their archery event and I know they would welcome spectators.

Last Saturday’s football fixture at home v Orington was a tense affair with Catsfield’s Colin White getting the first goal in the first half. A cheap free kick was given away in the second half and Orington scored. As often happens at the beginning of the season before the players reach peak fitness, the game became a bit niggly and in the final minute Captain Tony Luke scored the winning goal. So, 2 - 1 and our first win, hopes are high for the away game at Ore on Saturday 15th, kick off 3pm.
