Catsfield village voice

School holidays ended this week with the usual display of new school uniforms and excited children heading for the school gates.

The volume of traffic on the roads has increased with the end of the holidays and we should all be even more aware of the need to keep below the 30mph speed limit. Suddenly there are thoughts of autumn, with the evenings already drawing in. The start of the new school year often brings an Indian Summer, which would be very welcome!

Another event that brings awareness of the changing seasons is that the CADS have started rehearsing their Christmas Pantomime!

Vanessa says: We would like to see all who want to participate in any way, if you think you have something to offer please come and meet us and let us know. We are all quite informal and really not that scary!!

Our first rehearsal is on Thursday 6th September and every Tuesday and Thursday after that. From end of September, beginning of October some of us meet on Sunday afternoons to build sets, paint scenery, make costumes etc. So if you are interested at all please come along or contact me on 01424 844363.

The Over 55’s Lunch Club resumes in the Village Hall today at 12.30pm. Come along and enjoy good company, all the local news and one of Libby’s delicious home cooked lunches for only £3 including desert and tea or coffee.

Football news first this week. Sadly Mark Wadbrook, one of our best and most loyal players broke his leg during a friendly before the season started. We will miss him and wish him a quick recovery. The first game on Saturday at home was a loss to Hawkhurst, with Dave Booth and Colin White scoring for us in the 2 - 5 result.

The good news about Saturday was the re-introduction of teas after the match, thanks to Mrs Mould whom we hope soon to welcome properly when the family moves into the village. Apart from the last few years, tea has always been provided after matches and it is a splendid family tradition. None of the original tea ladies liked the huge spiders and the occasional mouse which lurked in the old wooden tea hut, so it was ironic the practice was abandoned just after the new pavilion was built. On 8th September we play Orington at home 3pm, and then away to Ore, home to Sandhurst on the 22nd and home to Orington on the 29th. Come up and support the team, they are in East Sussex League Division One.

There were some familiar faces taking part in the Battle Bonfire Boyes 10k run, which swept up Powdermill Lane and then tackled the long drag up to Tellis Coppice on Sunday. Clapping the runners through was quite tiring!

The last home cricket match was cancelled, again, because of the rain on Sunday. It has been a trying season, but all is not lost, hopefully we will take part in the “Sixes” tournament in Battle on Saturday, come and cheer us on.

Don’t forget the ‘Ride & Stride’ takes place tomorrow. The event runs from 09:00 until 18:00. Any rider or walker can ride or walk where they choose, and may start and finish at any church, visiting as many or as few as they like, in any participating county. Other than by bicycle, the only accepted alternative is on foot, wheelchair or horse.
