CCTV may hold clue to rapist

A NIGHTCLUB'S CCTV footage could hold vital clues in the hunt for a brutal rapist who preyed on a teenager.

Police are currently studying images from Waves on George Street, after an 18-year-old girl was raped on the beach in the early hours of Sunday.

The local girl had left Waves with a young man whom she met earlier in the venue.

The pair walked across the road to the shore opposite Sturdee Place and George Street, where she was attacked.

The man is described as being in his late teens or early twenties, about 5ft 10ins tall, wearing a dark top and dark jeans.

Waves owner Kim Johnson said: "We have been doing our utmost to help police with their enquires.

"We have CCTV footage of a man entering the premises and a man and the aggrieved party leaving, which we have provided to the police. We will do all we can to help catch the man, which is the main thing."

Detective Inspector Trevor Bowles said: "This was a dreadful attack on an innocent young woman. She had enjoyed an evening out, but was then subjected to a horrifying ordeal.

"I have a number of detectives working on this case. We are liaising closely with our colleagues in the Forensic Science Service in order that the identity of the offender can be quickly established."

"I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious or indeed, who knows the identity of the offender to contact us. The public will want this man caught as soon as we do, and I need anyone with information on this incident to contact us."

Police are also checking CCTV images of the surrounding area, and are said to be confident of capturing the offender.

Anyone with information can call Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 and ask for DC Jon Stainsby, or call anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was walking on the beach side of the road, near the crazy golf area.

There is thought to be no connection to the unsolved West Hill rape, which saw a 16-year-old girl attacked as she made her way to a friend's house after a night out in December.
