Celebrating 50 years of Battle Country Market

To celebrate a magnificent milestone a special market morning was held for the Battle Country Market at the Memorial Hall to mark 50 years since its inception.

The event was marked by the presence of Battle MP Huw Merriman and representatives from East Sussex Country Markets including Trish Ashton-Cobb, the market’s adviser.

Customers were encouraged to come in by the Battle Town Crier, Mike Dawes, and the event proved a great success with people shopping from 9.45am until 1pm on Saturday, April 16.

Treasurer Mike Clarke was ‘a happy man’ at the end of another successful market to mark its 50th birthday.

New and existing customers along with previous ‘marketeers’ were all treated to free refreshments and a slice of celebration cake, beautifully made by Joanna Black who decorated the cake with butterflies, flowers and a black cat.

Market manager and secretary Heather Franks said the market has been a feature of the town since 1966 and continues to be open on the first, second and fourth Friday mornings and the third Saturday of every month.

Battle Country Market is always a popular event in the town selling all local produce, home baking cakes and bread, Sussex cheeses, fresh vegetables, local eggs, flowers, jams, marmalades, chutneys, honey, knitted items, greetings cards and various crafts.

The venue is always at Battle Memorial Hall on High Street and the organisers usually hold a special Christmas market with a festive twist.
