Celebrating spring at May Fayre in Middleton-on-Sea

A forecast of poor weather for the first bank holiday of May meant the annual May Fayre at St Nicholas' Church in Middleton-on-Sea had to be held indoors.

It has become a tradition for spring to be celebrated on Shrubbs Field, in Elmer Road, with a fayre and maypole dancing but the church and church hall are always on standby in the case of bad weather. Stalls were set up inside this year, so people could browse in comfort.

Spirits were not dampened, however, and the fayre began with the annual crowning of the May King and Queen.

They were attended by some of their fellow pupils from Bishop Tufnell CE Infant and Junior schools.

The Rev William Marston, vicar of St Nicholas, said: “There was a very lively fayre, as plants, jewellery and gifts were sold.

“A bottle tombola was complemented by a raffle with some handsome prizes.

“Tasty burgers and hot-dogs, along with delicious cream teas, were enjoyed by many people.

“Presiding as compere, Erik Jak gave an as ever lively and entertaining commentary.

“I am very grateful to all those who helped to make the fayre such a wonderful occasion. It was a great opportunity for the village to come together in celebration of spring.”
