The match, which will take place at the home of Godalming Town on Sunday October 26, was described as a ‘celebration’ of William Ruewell’s life, according to his lifelong friend Tom Kelly.

Tom, 22, from Littlehampton, has helped to organise the game in memory of William - the pair played football together in school playgrounds.

He said: “It is a celebration - we have had the sad moments, and this is a celebration of his life.

“He was always there to put an arm around you and help you if you were feeling down.

“He was a great laugh and a great friend.”

All money raised by players and spectators will be donated to St Dominic’s School in Godalming, Will’s former school, at his family’s request.

Tom has set up a Facebook page called ‘Let’s Play for Will’, where match preparations are taking shape.

Tom said: “We were always playing in our break times so it felt right.

“I thought it would be the right thing to do and the response has been brilliant.

“The family suggested the school, and I am looking forward to raising the money for them.”

Around 20 players are confirmed to take part at this stage, with scores of spectators expected.

As well as the football, there will be a raffle which includes a prize donated by the team William supported.

Tom wrote to Liverpool FC, who donated tickets to a tour of their Anfield stadium and club museum to the raffle.

Tom added: “It is a brilliant gesture and I am humbled they were able to send something down.

“I think the match is a great way to remember him.

“Anybody can come and watch. It is going to be a great day.”
