Celebrations as Selsey Snak Shak receive Queen’s Award

Volunteers past and present turned out to celebrate the Phoenix Snak Shak being presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2015.

The award, the equivalent of an MBE for a volunteer group, was presented at Selsey Town Hall on Wednesday evening by Susan Pyper, the lord lieutenant of West Sussex, Denise Patterson, the high sheriff of West Sussex and deputy lieutenants Rear Admiral John Lippiett and Margaret Johnson.

The citation from the Queen was read by Mrs Johnson and the crystal award was presented by the Mrs Pyper to the chairman of the trustees, Martin Woods.

Mr Woods said how privileged he felt to accept this award on behalf of all those volunteers and trustees who have worked so hard for the last ten years to facilitate a safe meeting place for the youth of Selsey.

Founder members Margaret and Gerry Smith and Marjorie Graham were present and were delighted that the two other founder members, Brian and Liz Eggleton, had managed to fly in from their present home in Scotland to attend the special ceremony.

A number of county and district councillors turned out including Patricia Arculus, Nick Thomas, Eileen Lintill and Dave Hyland, along with representatives from local churches and businesses, Wave FM’s Gloria Hill, Ross Williamson from Bridging Fund charity and other Snak Shak supporters, as well as all volunteers past and present.

Kylee Scott, the Selsey Youth Worker, was there with a group of girls who attend regularly.

Kylee has been working at the Snak Shak for more than 18 months and has built up strong relationships with all the youngsters who attend the Snak Shak and the Academy school.

In her address, Mrs Pyper praised Selsey for its strong community spirit, demonstrated by the numbers in attendance and the fact that this is the fourth Queen’s Award that she had presented in Selsey in the last two years.
