BAKE OFF: Will you be Star Baker? The Horticultural Society and Women’s Institute present The Great Chailey Bake Off tomorrow, Saturday, at the village hall. Like the television series there will be three classes and you can enter as many as you like the cost is 50p per class. Class One is the Signature Bake, six iced finger buns (sweet yeast dough), your recipe and your flavour. Class Two the Technical Challenge, six French Macarons (recipe provided on registration) and Class Three the Show Stopper, a garden themed decorated cake, one or two tiers. Entries to be set up from midday to 1pm and judging to start at 1pm. Do go along at 2pm for demonstrations, viewing and refreshments and see the prize giving at 3.30pm. QUIZ NIGHT: Organised by the Friends of St Peter’s Church, takes place at the village hall tomorrow, Saturday, at 7.30pm for 7.45pm. Tickets cost £12.50 per head which includes a choice of hot supper and pudding with vegetarian options, take drinks with you. Everyone is welcome to join in as it promises to be a very good evening. BRIGHTON HALF MARATHON: Takes place on Sunday and the Chailey Heritage Foundation team comprising of Al, Nadia, Sam, Lee and Sarah will be fundraising towards the Foundation’s Dream Centre Appeal. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: The Neighbourhood Plan is now at the stage where a series of draft objectives have been put together, covering the desired outcomes of the Plan. These draft objectives have been based on the feedback received from residents and businesses in the parish, on what the plan should seek to achieve. A copy of the draft objectives and how residents can provide feedback on them was included with the February edition of the Chailey News and is also available on the Chailey Community Website (www.chailey.org). Two Task Group workshops were held by the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group last week. The third on Economy and Transport takes place at the Chailey Reading Room on Wednesday at 7.30pm. This is a chance for residents to drop in and give their views on this aspect of the Plan and the objectives. All are welcome to attend this workshop. If you were unable to attend the workshops last week on Housing and Community you can still comment on the draft objectives via the Community Website www.chailey.org or through the Parish Office at [email protected]. The Steering Group will be publishing a draft of the Neighbourhood Plan later this year and, in view of the controversial planning decision in Newick, it is vital that the residents of Chailey are behind the Plan and support its objectives. So please have your say.

LAMB BUTCHERY DAY: Takes place at Townings Farm on Sunday March 5 from10am till 4pm and includes a light lunch. This will be an in depth training day in their butchery, where you will learn to produce quality cuts from a whole or half lamb. You will also learn to use the large mincer and their vacuum packer to prepare your meat to take home. The cost is £154 full days training with lunch and half a lamb or mutton to take home and £204 full days training with a whole lamb or mutton to take home. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: Meet on Tuesday March 7 at 7.45pm, at the village hall, when John Southgate will be talking about The History of Mystery. John is an experienced magician; having been admitted to the exclusive Inner Magic Circle in the 1960s and members look forward to learning about this interesting subject. JUMBLE SALE: Takes place at the village hall, on Saturday March 11 at 11am in aid of the Bonfire Society. If you are able to help to set up either on the Friday evening from 7pm or Saturday from 9am then please contact Diane Palmer on 01273 401900 or via email at [email protected].

LUNCH CLUB: At St Peter’s Church is held monthly at 12.30pm in the church on Chailey Green and the next lunch club is on Thursday March 16. All are welcome to go along for a delicious meal, meet new people and chat and relax. The food is all freshly prepared and home-cooked with a main course, choice of puddings and tea/coffee all for £5 per person. There is easy access and disabled toilet facilities. GROW AND SHOW: The Horticultural Society Spring Show is at the village hall on Saturday March 18 and has classes for all age groups and experience including fruit, vegetables, flower arranging, crafts and cookery. Children can collect a bucket and seed potatoes at this show, plant them and bring the bucket back to the Summer Show for the crop to be weighed. The heaviest crop wins a cash prize. WHIST DRIVE: Organised by Chailey Women’s Institute, is at the village hall on Saturday April 1 at 7.30pm. Admission costs £3.50 and everyone is welcome, there will be prizes, a raffle and refreshments.

SWIMARATHON: Chailey Heritage Foundation has been chosen as the main beneficiary of this year’s Swimarathon, an annual event organised by Haywards Heath Lions Club which takes place on Good Friday, April 14, at the Dolphin Centre in Haywards Heath. They will be fundraising for the Foundation’s DREAM Centre Appeal, to build a modern and vibrant indoor activity space where children and young people with complex disabilities and health needs can participate in a mixture of arts and physical activities.

Haywards Heath Lions are looking to recruit over 60 teams of 6 to take part in a competition to see how many lengths they can swim in 55 minutes. This is a very popular annual event and last year 64 teams competed and raised over £23,000 between them. ST GEORGE’S DAY: Chailey Bonfire Society are holding their annual St George’s Day event on Saturday April 22, from midday to 4pm, at the Waterworks field opposite Markstakes Corner. Every village organisation is invited to join the Bonfire Society and celebrate St George’s Day by having a stall/activity to introduce people to your produce/work. If you are a charity and will not be making a profit there will be no charge for the stall, but if you are going to make a sale a donation of £5 or a gift for the Society’s tombola would be greatly accepted. PARISH COUNCIL: A vacancy has arisen on the parish council which the council proposes to fill by co-option. Any eligible person who wishes to be considered as a candidate to fill the vacancy should submit a brief curriculum vitae and a written statement explaining why he/she wishes to join the council and the skills and experience that he/she would contribute to the work of the council. The information must be sent to Stephen Treharne, the Clerk to the Council, at the Parish Office, The Reading Room, Chailey Green, BN8 4DA by Friday March 10.
