QUIZ NIGHT: In aid of Chailey Heritage Foundation, takes place at the Foundation on Saturday October 8. Teams of up to 10 people accepted. Tickets are £10, including food, and are available from [email protected].

FIND OUT MORE: There is a Find Out More Day on Sunday October 9 and anyone, skilled or unskilled, who can offer a day a month or more to the Bluebell Railway are invited to find out more about volunteering in our various departments. Book your place on an orientation tour, and get more information about the opportunities at the Railway, by phoning 01825 720800 or emailing [email protected].

BADGE NIGHT: The bonfire society’s badge night will be slightly different from past years in that they will be holding two evenings the first at the Horns Lodge on Friday October 14 and the second at The Five Bells on Friday October 21, both from at 6.30pm. You will be able to renew your membership at either evening. Membership costs just £5 per adult or £10 for a family of two adults and children. For your membership you will receive a members badge and details of how to get a bonfire jumper. Being a member of Chailey Bonfire Society also enables you to march at other society bonfire celebrations throughout the bonfire season. If you are new to the village or interested in finding out more about your local bonfire society please come along and have a chat with committee members who will be available all evening. We will be running a raffle on both evenings, which will be drawn at the Five Bells on October 21. Tickets are £1 each. Please go along and support your bonfire society.

ANNUAL SHOW: The horticultural society held its Autumn Show recently and sadly the number of entries was down over all classes although the standard remained remarkably high. Cups and trophies were awarded the British Caledonian Cup (vegetables) and Sam Briggs Memorial Cup (best vegetables over all three shows) Peter Estcourt, Hickwells Cup (best vegetable exhibit) Alan Rees, Bowling Cup (flowers) and Weller Cup (dahlias) Linda Blaker, Chris Bone Memorial Cup (wine and cordials) Annelise Schlup, Cooper Cup (cookery and handicrafts) Pat Stepney, TSB Cup (floral exhibit) Jean Piper, Village Cup (7 years and under) and Bosun Cup (children’s classes over all three shows) Eddie Finch and Jubilee Shield (best new exhibitor in children’s classes) Imogen Cornwell.

LUNCH CLUB: At St Peter’s Church is held monthly at 12.30pm in the church on Chailey Green and the next lunch club is on Thursday October 20. All are welcome to go along for a delicious meal, meet new people and chat and relax. The food is all freshly prepared and home-cooked with a main course, choice of puddings and tea/coffee for £5 per person. There is easy access and disabled toilet facilities. AGM: It is important that small village societies keep going so please support the horticultural society in 2017. Their AGM is on the Thursday October 20 in the Reading Room at 8pm. A few nibbles and drinks will be provided. Everyone is welcome and new ideas are especially welcome.

GIANTS OF STEAM: Are at the Bluebell Railway on Friday October 28 to Sunday 30. There will be an intensive train service throughout the weekend between Sheffield Park, Horsted Keynes, Kingscote & East Grinstead. Also a free vintage bus service is planned from Brighton and Lewes to Sheffield Park on Sunday October 30. For more information visit www.bluebell-railway.com/event/giants-of-steam/.

TRACK TREK 2016: This year is the Bluebell Railways fourth Track Trek event which takes place on November 12. This year’s Trek is the longest covering the entire line from East Grinstead to Sheffield Park, offering a unique opportunity to see the whole railway from a different perspective. It is not every day that you can walk along the track without any steam trains running. The money raised will benefit two very different projects at the Railway. The first sees the creation of hugely improved undercover accommodation at Horsted Keynes so that more historic carriages can be protected from the weather whilst they wait in the queue for restoration back to their former glory. Currently many of these carriages are sitting in the open exposed to all weather or under tarpaulins which does not provide full protection. The other project will see the development of the loco shed area at Sheffield Park with hugely improved access to the historic steam locomotive collection including many hands on opportunities. This Accessible Steam Heritage (ASH) project will allow passengers to learn more about the collection of locomotives and hopefully inspire the next generation of engine drivers and firemen. Pre-registration is essential to help those organising the event have a good idea of the number of people requiring the use of the buses at the start and end of the day. Plus you can create your own fundraising page on BT MyDonate or an Organised Event fundraising page on JustGiving.

MUM AND TODDLER GROUP: Is being set up at St Peter’s Church on Chailey Green, which will be free of charge, with coffee, tea and biscuits available to parents and carers.
