PLANT SALE: will be at the forecourt of the Horns Lodge this Saturday (May 21) from 10am to midday. This is a chance to get some excellent summer bedding, tomato plants, vegetable plants, perennials and much more. As the sale is being organised by the Horticultural Society advice on planting and growing will I'm sure be available too.

GARDEN PARTY: is at St Peter & St James Hospice on North Common Road, BN8 4ED, this Saturday (May 21) from 1.30pm to 5pm. All are welcome to enjoy the tranquil and beautiful setting of the Hospice with views of the South Downs. This is a chance to see the work of their wonderful and dedicated team of volunteer gardeners. You can enjoy a stroll in their Woodland Walk and appreciate the award-winning Reflective Garden donated by Plumpton College. Also see their two new donkeys. There will be a plant and vegetable stall with home-grown plants, as well as bedding donated by South Downs Nurseries. South Downs’ own ‘plant doctor’ will be available to give advice from 2pm to 4pm. You can also play Chip Chuck, see the other stalls and relish homemade refreshments. Admission is £2 per person, with children free and all proceeds will go to the Hospice.

COMMONS SOCIETY: meet this Saturday (May 21) at 2pm at Pound Common car park for a walk across the Commons led by Monty Larkin, Grazing Co-ordinator for the Sussex Pony Grazing & Conservation Trust, to see the resident herd of Exmoor ponies. Monty will be accompanied by Lisa Clark, from the Exmoor Pony Society, who will explain the finer points of the Exmoor pony with her pony Tiger Moth. This is an opportunity to find out about the ponies, how they are cared for and the benefits of grazing them on the Commons.

CRICKET: sees Chailey in a league game this Saturday (May 21) against Streat & Westmeston at the ground at Middleton Manor, Westmeston, at 1.30pm. On Sunday (May 22) there is a friendly game against Sussex Ukranians at 2.30pm the sports ground, North Chailey. Interested in playing cricket? You will be made most welcome at Chailey Cricket Club. DIGITAL SANDBOX: From May to early September at Sheffield Park and Garden there is the chance to create your own Capability Brown inspired landscape design with their hands-on 3D digital sandbox. OPEN GARDEN: in aid of St Peter’s Church Restoration Fund takes place on Bank Holiday Monday May 30 from 2pm to 5pm. The garden at Chailey End, Oxbottom Lane, Newick, is in a beautiful setting with a variety of interesting plants, shrubs and trees. Admission is £3 with children, under 16, free. 50 THINGS WILD WEEK: at Sheffield Park and Garden is from Monday May 30 to Friday June 3 starting at 11am and the cost £3 to £5 a child. From raft building to pond dipping, there is a different 50 Things activity to tick off your list every day in half term. CORO NUOVO YOUNG MUSICIANS BURSARY 2016: The Friends of St Peter’s Church and Coro Nuovo, the leading Sussex based choir, are delighted to announce details of the preliminary round of the Coro Nuovo Young Musician Bursary which will take place at St Peter’s Church, Chailey Green, on Sunday June 5 from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. The new bursary, in the sum of £500, will be awarded to help to further the studies or continuing development of a young musician from Sussex. Nine contestants, from voice to violin, aged between 17 and 25, are taking part in the preliminary round which members of the public can attend. Tickets priced £5, to include tea and cake, will be available on the door or from Janet Barnes on 01825 722574 or e-mail [email protected]. Proceeds from the event will be shared between the St Peter’s Church Restoration Fund and bursaries for future young musicians.

VOLUNTEERING AT THE BLUEBELL RAILWAY: want to find out more? A ‘Find Out More Day’ is taking place on Sunday June 12. Anyone, skilled or unskilled, who can offer a day a month or more to the Railway are invited to ‘find out more’ about volunteering in our various departments. And if under 16, you can gain experience in the 9F Club. SUSSEX VS SURREY: County women’s cricket match is on Sunday June 12, starting 11am, at Sheffield Park’s historic cricket ground. This is the first time that Sheffield Park has hosted a women’s county cricket match and is sure to be an exciting game. Entry is via the landscape garden and normal admission applies.

COACH OUTING: to Dungeness National Nature Reserve takes place on Saturday June 18 from 9.30am to 5pm. This is a follow up to Nikki Gammans’ excellent talk to the Commons Society in 2014 on the Bumble Be and she will be the guide at this wonderful reserve. There will be an afternoon tea stop on the return journey. The cost is about £15 and booking is essential, just call Linda Kent, on 01444 440622.

SMALL GRANTS: Each year the Parish Council makes a number of Small Grants (typically around £250) to assist societies and other Chailey organisations with their administrative costs, or with a special project.
