Chance to play grand piano in Priory Meadow, Hastings

A rare opportunity to play a concert-standard grand piano is being offered to pianists of all ages in Hastings.

The grand piano provided by Sussex Pianos, will be installed at Priory Meadow from Friday, February 19, until Sunday, February 21.

Adults can play up to 20 minutes and children can play for a shorter time.

Music teachers are also welcome to take a group of pupils.

The piano will be available from 9am to 5.30pm Friday to Saturday and 10am till 4pm on Sunday.

Pianists can book by emailing [email protected], texting 07788 723003, or turning up on the day.

Pianists will also be able to book a slot for Priory Meadow at the temporarily re-opened Hastings Old Town Museum from 10.30am to 5pm every weekend until March 5.

The event is part of Hastings Music Festival and will act as a curtain raiser for this year’s Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition at White Rock Theatre from Thursday, February 25, until Saturday, March 5.

Stage One of the competition will take place at the White Rock Theatre from February 25-27.

Young competitors, aged between 16-30, will play excerpts from their chosen concerto.

Tickets are £5 per session or £12 for the day.

Up to 24 contestants, twice as many as last year, will then go forward to Stage Two on Monday, February 29, and Tuesday, March 1, to play a movement from a Beethoven and a Mozart concerto.

Children under 16 accompanied by a paying adult will be able to attend Stage One and Two sessions for free.

Schools can also send groups to the first two stages for free, email Hannah Deeble at [email protected].

A maximum of 12 contestants will go through to the semi-finals on Wednesday, March 2, when they will play a programme of their choice.

The grand final will take place on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.

The winner will receive a cheque for £10,000 and the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
