Change of date for annual charity day

THE British Heart Foundation (BHF) is holding its annual cycle event at Goodwood earlier than usual.

The event, which raised almost £9,000 for the charity last year, is taking place on July 7, rather than later in the month.

But other than the date, it’s business as usual and organisers hope to beat last year’s fundraising total of £9,000.

“Families come along each year and we have children as young as two or three pedalling round the flat
2.4-mile circuit – it’s amazing how many laps some of them can manage,” said Jane Ramage, chairman of the local BHF fundraising committee.

“We also have cycling club members who like to use it as a distance training event, and some of them complete 100 miles. It’s such a friendly event, and there’s enough space for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves.

“The atmosphere at Goodwood is very special. People can bring picnics, and spectators have a great time too. Riders are under no pressure – they can do as many or as few laps as they want, at their own pace.”

The day is aimed at encouraging healthy exercise as well as fundraising through sponsorship.

Cardiovascular disease is the UK’s biggest killer, and the BHF runs the events to raise funds for lifesaving research and equipment as well as for BHF nurses who help to support patients with long-term illness.
