Charity day to go ahead following Buckswood blaze

The blaze broke out at Buckswood School in Guestling shortly before 6.30pm on Wednesday, February 17.

At the height of the fire, ten fire engines were on the scene, with firefighters from across East Sussex tackling the flames.

An investigation is continuing into how the blaze started, but East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says it believes the cause was accidental.

Despite the drama of last week, Buckswood says this weekend’s International Day event will go ahead as planned.

A spokesperson for the school said: “After a very busy few days at Buckswood School, preparing the campus for the new term after fire last week affected three classrooms, the school is pleased to announce that this Saturday (February 27) the planned International Day event will still take place and everyone is welcome to visit the school and eat their way around the world for charity.

“Every year the school celebrates its long international heritage with a food, culture and musical showcase of the scholars home nations.

“Since the school was founded in 1933, a true British education with an international element has been at the core of the school’s philosophy, to begin with; forward thinking industrial pioneers would enrol their children at Buckswood whilst they pursued international careers and now the school has grown to be home and school to children from 48 different nations from near enough every continent.

“This weekend, the gates will be open between 11am and 1pm and the public is welcome to come and meet the scholars who will proudly be showcasing their home countries and selling delicacies with all profits going to the Buckswood Foundation who support AIDS work, sustainable agriculture and education projects in the nation of Swaziland where the school visit every year and carry out vital charity work.”
