Charity event in memory of '˜stolen' Hove cat Mr Cheeky

The owners of Mr Cheeky are holding a '˜Mad Catters' tea party in memory of their cat, after he was found dead eight weeks after going missing.

Mr Cheeky was hit by a car on Saturday (January 28) in Cromwell Road and was taken to Wilbury Vets, but could not be saved.

CCTV footage from a neighbour’s camera appears to show Mr Cheeky being taken from the front terrace of his home in Brunswick Street East, Hove, on Sunday, December 4.

The story of the ginger tom touched the hearts of many, as his owners appealed for his return before Christmas, and received national, regional and local media coverage.

After the news of Mr Cheeky’s death, his owner Laura King planned a feline-themed get-together at Patisserie Valerie in Hove on February 19.

The event will raise funds for Lost Cats Brighton, a charity which helps rescue and rehome more than 200 cats annually.

Ms King said: “This is the best outcome we can make of a situation as dreadful as this one, to take some positive element and move forward.”

The event has a ‘crazy cat lady’ dress code, and aims to physically unite Brighton’s close-knit online community of cat owners in a fun-filled afternoon.

Ms King said she is continuing to leaflet appealing for any information regarding the kidnap of her beloved pet.

“Pet theft is a crime and we will continue to press for a prosecution. The last thing we can do for Mr Cheeky is to catch the culprits and send a message,” said Ms King.
