Charity girls' bid to help homeless

IT is particularly appropriate in light of the recent reports of the upsurge of homelessness in the south east that three girls from St Leonards-Mayfield School have decided to spend a night sleeping outside the school reception hall in cardboard boxes.

Their aim is to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless and to raise money for the Cardinal Hume Centre for homeless people in London. The girls, Vicky Rennie, from London, Emma Blake, from Crowborough and Zoe Driscoll from Mayfield feel that many people, both at the school and in the wider community, know very little about the extent of homelessness in Britain today. They want to learn more about it themselves and to bring it to the attention of the school and the public. 'We are so fortunate ourselves and would like to do something practical for those who are homeless. We have been learning how important it is for anyone who wants to get a job to have a fixed address and realize that without a home people are unable to work,' the girls said. They are hoping to raise more than 500 for the Cardinal Hume Centre.
