Students from St Mary’s helped the starter and welcomed golfers onto the course prior to teeing off. Those competing in the event enjoyed a Stableford competition in sparkling sunshine and high spirits.

The winning team was Hobson’s Choice with a team score of 94 points.

The competition was followed by dinner and a silent auction, with the highlight of the event being what was described as “a fantastic stand-up comedy routine, guitar solo and signing choir performance” from some of the youngsters who attend St Mary’s.

The young people at St Mary’s have severe speech, language and communication disabilities. Many also have complex needs including physical disabilities, learning difficulties and medical issues. The school is part of The Talking Trust charity which is committed to improving the lives of children and young people with communication disabilities which affect their ability to acquire education and develop the skills necessary for independent living.

Dr Sharon Menghini, CEO of The Talking Trust, said the golf day had been a great success and the money raised from the event will be put to good use by the school. She said: “I am delighted with the support that we received for our golf day and auction.

“The money raised on the day will help us to pay for vital improvements to the children’s bedrooms and living areas here at St Mary’s. Thank you very much to all the companies and individuals who sponsored the event, donated auction prizes, encouraged others to enter a team, and attended on the day – we couldn’t have done it without your help. Thank you!”

Along with helping to fund residential improvements at the school, students also had a hand in deciding what projects some of the money would be spent on and they voted fro theatre trips and recording studio sessions.
