A party was held at Fitzalan Howard Day Centre, in Pavilion Road, Worthing, on Saturday.

The aim of the evening’s entertainment and festivities was to celebrate ability within disability. Clients and volunteers staged music and drama performances that had the audience singing, signing and dancing along.

Among the 150 guests were former clients and volunteers who have been involved in the charity since its opening in the 1960s.

Rhona Emmerich, manager of Worthing Scope, said: “Fifty years really is something worth celebrating.

“We decided to have this party to thank all our dedicated staff, volunteers and army of local supporters, without whom the charity would not be the success it has become today.

“They are the reason Worthing Scope continues to flourish and the foundation upon which we will build our future successes in the next 50 years.”

At the time the charity was founded, it was called the Worthing, Littlehampton and District Spastic Society and exclusively supported people with cerebral palsy.

The charity has since grown with the needs of the local community and now provides support for children, adults and their families with cerebral palsy and other developmental conditions, such as autism and Down’s Syndrome.

The charity is now active across West Sussex, providing day centre services, housing, disability grants and social clubs for clients and their families.

Worthing Scope also supports local causes by providing funding to improve communal facilities and to make them accessible to people of all abilities. The charity is also the primary sponsor for The Tornados wheelchair basketball team.
