Charity sets the tone with new year record attempt

Disability charity Scope are ringing the changes in the New Year by aiming to set a new world record for recycling mobile phones.

The Sackville Road branch will be accepting old handsets from Friday, January 8-Friday, January 15 as part of a national awareness and fundraising drive.

Every phone donated raises 3 for Scope to continue its work supporting disabled people, particularly those with cerebral palsy.

At a time when many will be cradling new iPhones or Blackberries, recycling company Redeem Plc, who are working alongside Scope for this attempt, estimate over 730,000 old handsets are gathering dust in East Sussex cupboards alone.

Phones, along with quality clothing, books and bric-a-brac, are welcomed by the shop at any time, but only phones received during the specified week in January count as part of the attempt to beat the current world record of 952 handsets donated in one week.

Donating your old handset also diverts handsets away from landfill sites. Old phones are sold on or recycled down to their component parts.
