Charity walkers meet up from opposite ends

A round-Britain walker from Westergate has met another long-distance individual on a charity trek.

Colin Snook (72) crossed paths with Weymouth 19-year-old Seb Green at the Glen Nevis campsite in Scotland.

Colin is walking clockwise around the British coast to raise money for Climb. Seb is on his way to completing the feat in the opposite direction for two charities.

Their paths crossed last Saturdayjust before Seb was about to tackle Ben Nevis. Colin (72) wrote on his website: "He is a nice lad and going strong despite some recent food poisoning. We had a good chat about our projects."

By then, Colin had covered 2,208 miles on foot during 184 days of walking.

The former firefighter set off from Bognor Regis on foot on January 1 with 4,000 miles along the British coastline ahead of him.

Setting off westwards, he left the west country behind in March. He completed the entire Welsh coast in May and reached Scotland on June 7.

Ahead of him lies perhaps his biggest challenge of the hike to Cape Wrath through desolate regions by July 27.

Colin has so far raised 10,157 towards his 50,000 target in support of Climb, or Children Living with Inherited Metabolic diseases.

Some 16,000 families are affected through 715 of the diseases. They are devastating, incurable and change the lives of everyone involved.

Knowledge and treatment has improved but the rarity of the condition can still delay diagnosis and cost lives.

Colin said: "Because of the complexity and sheer number of metabolic diseases, Climb is not one of the best known charities. However, for those affected, the need for such support is great."

As well as sponsorship, Colin is appealing for people to contact friends and relatives to provide a bed for the night to avoid spending too much on accommodation.

Climb executive director Steve Hannigan said: "This is a tremendous challenge for Colin and we are delighted to support his efforts every step of the way.

"Not only will it bring Climb fantastic sponsorship, it will also publicise our important work across England, Wales and Scotland."

Offers can be made to his website.
