A charity organisation which helps the elderly and individuals who are in need of a '˜good neighbour' is calling for more volunteers.

Neighbourly Care, set up by councillor Anne Jones in 2008, works across Burgess Hill, Hassocks, Hurstpierpoint and the surrounding areas, offering support that a ‘good neighbour’ might offer – such as shopping, transport to a doctors or dentist appointment and minor household and DIY jobs.

The town, district and county councillor, who is chairman of the charity, came up with the idea when she cared for her late husband for 25 years.

She said: “I couldn’t change a light in the kitchen and of course John couldn’t do this either – this made me question how people on their own could cope.

“I realised that this was a great problem and when I see a problem I like to solve it.”

The charity also targets loneliness after the councillor ‘just needed someone to talk to’ when her husband died.

Around 30 volunteers currently give up their free time and are contacted when someone is in need of help. But more are required to be able to reach out to people in every town.

“We desperately need someone in Hurstpierpoint to answer phone calls,” the councillor added.
