Charlie's charity walk

THREE young school - Charlie Boutwood 10, Reece Gosden and Jack Henty, both 9 - will be walking 10 miles of the South Downs Way on Sunday for Charlie s Challenge, raising funds for research into children s brain tumours.

Charlie, whose home is at Chiddingly, is the inspiration behind the charity which was established by his parents in 1993 after he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Having had an emergency eight-hour operation which was only able to remove three-quarters of the tumour, he endured a testing year of intense chemotherapy followed by six weeks of radiotherapy which meant a general anaesthetic every day. Against the odds he made a remarkable recovery and now enjoys life to the full.

The idea for the sponsored walk was hatched by Charlie together with his young friends who decided that they wanted to try to do something to help young brain tumour sufferers who have been less fortunate.

They are hoping to raise in excess of 500 which will go towards a new brain tumour research project into Medullablastoma brain tumours (the same type that Charlie suffered from) which Charlie s Challenge is co-funding with sister charity, the Samantha Dickson Research Trust.

Charlie s Challenge carries no administration costs therefore guaranteeing that every penny raised is spent on much needed research into children s brain tumours.

Sponsorship for the boys can be sent (made payable to Charlie s Challenge) to Charlie s Challenge, c/o Boutwood, 37 Terminus Road, Eastbourne BN21 3QL or call 01323 640212 (office hours).
