Charlotte helpsneedy childrenin West Africa

Charlotte, 23, who works at Benenden Hospital, has just returned from her latest trip to West African country, where she was working with a charity called BACE – Building and Assisting Communities with Education, which was set up by her family.

During her two week trip she treated a young boy who had the symptoms of malaria and a man who had burns on the soles of his feet.

Charlotte gave him infant suspension to bring his temperature down and was able to help make him comfortable thanks to an electrical fan, which had been donated by a BACE supporter.

She said: “Luckily, by the end of the day, he was well enough to be taken back to his family home.”

The Northiam nurse was with a group of 37 BACE volunteers. The aim of the November trip was to build a new health clinic in Bonsa. The clinic is three quarters of the way finished and Gambian builders will now take over.

Aid donated by Benenden Hospital, Benenden Health, staff, members and supporters has included seeds, a wheelbarrow, toys and pencils and pens.

In November BACE celebrated hitting a £100,000 fund-raising target. It needs to raise another £5,000 to complete the health clinic project.
