Charter night for Senlac St Mary's

THURSDAY February 4 was a very special evening for 'a very special place' when the recently formed Interact Club at St Mary's Wrestwood Children's Trust held its charter night.

Interact, one of Rotary International's fastest growing service programmes, is a club for young people aged between 14 and 18 who will complete at least two community service projects each year while at the same time developing leadership skills and advancing international goodwill.

The clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary Clubs which provide support and guidance but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

The Senlac-St Mary's Interact Club joins more than 10,700 clubs in 109 countries worldwide, including Bexhill's St Richards Interact Club formed four years ago.

Shortly after that, David King and Stuart Earl of Senlac Rotary Club started working towards forming a club at St Mary's with whom Senlac has a long-standing relationship.

Since then, other Senlac Rotarians have worked closely with Neil Masterton and Peter Bellis of St Mary's, as well as with the founder members of the new club and Ray Dixon of Bexhill RC who was able to offer the experience he gained from helping to form the St Richard's club.

Mayor of Bexhill Bridget George attended the charter night as did Gail Pilling, CEO of St Mary's Wrestwood Children's Trust, Rotary district governor Euan Eddi, Senlac Rotary president John Relfe, Bexhill Rotary president Roger Batey, members of St Mary's staff and Rotarians from Senlac, Bexhill and Battle Rotary Clubs.

Guests, including the proud parents of the new Interactors, witnessed the presentations of regalia and accoutrements to the officers and members of the new club including president Louis Spenceley, president elect Luke Pitman, secretary Mary Woodall and treasurer Joseph Osben.

A splendid buffet was provided by St Mary's and the magician Richard Bellars, much to the delight of the students and guests, performed card tricks and other magical moments during the refreshments break.

Cllr George said: "The youngsters can be justifiably proud of themselves.

"This is yet another example of how much work is done behind the scenes to help empower others to achieve."
