Check your health today - at Priory Meadow

YOUNG men are invited to check their health at Priory Meadow on Monday. Various tests will be on offer, including blood sugar levels, blood pressure and body fat, and there will be athletic challenges for the more competitive.

These will include 500m rowing and 30-second step competitions, with free Falaise Gym passes for the winners.

The event is part of Men's Health Week, which starts today.

Advice will be available on a whole range of topics including sexual health, alcohol, substance misuse and smoking.

A local GP will also be available for part of the day for anyone who would like general advice on any particular medical condition, and there will also be demonstrations of boxing, skipping and how to make a healthy lunch.

Among the organisations involved in this year's event are Hastings and Rother PCT, Pulse, Active Hastings, Action for Change, Youth Development Service, CRI, Xtrax Young People's Centre, Respond, DAB Arts, Hastings College, Falaise Gym and Spin City Cycles.

Dave Whatley, community development worker for Pulse, said: "Although the event in Priory Meadow is specifically aimed at young men, any man is welcome to come along on the day, no matter what their age.

"Men are often reluctant to seek medical advice and are more inclined to tough it out or not bother at all, so we hope the day will encourage them to come along and get advice and information, or maybe just some ideas on how they could lead a healthier life, in a friendly and informal setting."
