Cheers! The Bevy opens

The Bevy - the first community-owned pub on a housing estate - will open today.

After a long wait and an enormous effort, The Bevy - the first community-owned pub on a housing estate - will open today at noon.

Yesterday (Thursday) students from Brighton Aldridge Community Academy used the pub's kitchens - it does not yet have a chef - to give them a try out by cooking lunch for 40 older people.

Last night, Brighton and South Downs Campaign for Real Ale tried out the beer.

And today - after three years - it is our turn.

You may, however, want to wait until tomorrow (Saturday), when Father John Wall, the vicar of Moulsecoomb '“ who has done so much to make the miracle happen - gives the pub a proper blessing.

Formerly The Bevendean Hotel, it closed in 2010, leaving nearly 18,000 people miles away from a pub.

The Bevy, under the management of Chris Pobjoy, (pictured right) will be open every day from noon to 11pm.
