Cherry on top of church's past

A NEW guidebook for St Nicolas Church was launched yesterday on the St Nicolas day.

Parishioner Cherry Taylor has spent several years collecting information and producing illustrations to create a guide to the ancient church in old Shoreham.

It contains a historial background, architectural information, a description of the customs as well as quirky facts about the church.

It was the Saxons who built the original stone church before 900AD and it is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Cherry said: "St Nicolas is a wonderful church with a wealth of history and we get visitors from all over the world coming to see it.

"I thought it would be useful to have a guide so the community and visitors could find out how much as possible about it.

"It has stood for thousands of years and served generations of Shoreham."

The guide is available from the church and from Bookworms in Shoreham High Street.
