About 50 fundraisers have today (Saturday, October 10) set off on the adventure, which will see them scaling parts of the Great Wall of China in aid of Chestnut Tree House.

The fundraisers have raised an incredible £85,935 for the needy children’s hospice.

A majority of the team left by coach from Worthing shortly after 4.30pm this afternoon, before stopping at Pease Pottage to pick up some more trekkers.

It’s expected that the group will take off from Heathrow Airport later this evening before arriving in Beijing the next day.

Reporter Tom Cotterill is following the trekkers’ nine-day adventure and will be posting updates about the trip throughout the week.

He said: ‘This is a truly thrilling opportunity and a once-in-a-lifetime experience for everyone.

‘It’s also an incredible way to raise money for a charity which does so much for seriously-ill children across Sussex and Hampshire.’

The nine-day trip is expected to raise enough money to pay for a total of two weeks treatment for Poling-based hospice.

Tom said: ‘Chestnut Tree House is a truly magical place and a vital lifeline for more than 300 families across the county.

‘They care for hundreds of children with life-limiting illnesses and do an incredible job.’

He added: ‘There is plenty of excitement on the coach right now. People have been fundraising tirelessly for more than a year to make this happen.’
