The new Labour Party leader is the subject of a debate between the local Labour Party and Green Party groups.

Mark Farwell stood as the prospective parliamentary candidate for Labour in May and Jasper Richmond stood for the Greens.

“Whilst I welcome Corbyn’s injection into politics of serious principles, there are some areas of his policy that do not address long-term issues, particularly concerning the environment and renewable energy,” said Mr Richmond before the debate.

However, Mr Farwell by contrast said: “Corbyn brings to the Labour Party a welcome return to true socialist values. I am very excited about his election as our new leader.”

As well as debating the immediate positives and negatives of Jeremy Corbyn, the local branches of the parties said they were partly using this as an experiment on their own futures.

Valerie Briginshaw from the Chichester and Bognor Green Party said: “Importantly we have staged this as an opportunity to see what common ground there is between us, the Green Party, and the Labour Party under Corbyn, and where there is potential for working together in the future.”

She said the last election left many voters ‘unrepresented’ and said the groups were keen to collaborate towards a fairer electoral system.

“In order to begin this we need to learn to trust each other and build alliances to fight campaigns in our joint interests,” she said.

“This kind of collaboration has to start with debating to explore our relative positions; our similarities and differences. We hope Monday’s debate will be the first of several events of this kind where different political parties and campaign groups can come together to fight common causes and build relationships for future collaboration.”

The debate takes place at the Friends’ Meeting House, in Priory Road, Chichester at 8pm on Monday (October 5).
