Shelagh Legrave, who lives in Midhurst and has served as principal and chief executive of the institution since 2010, was awarded the OBE for services to further education in the Queen’s birthday honours earlier this year.

She is one of three people to be appointed to the ceremonial office in recognition for distinguished service to the community by lord lieutenant Susan Pyper this week.

The post can include representing the lord lieutenant at formal functions, award ceremonies, citizenship ceremonies or attending Remembrance Day services.

Shelagh said: “It is an absolute honour to be appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for West Sussex. I am very much looking forward to assisting the Lord-Lieutenant in her duties.”

Before becoming principal Shelagh was chief operating officer at the college since April 2003, and has guided it towards an Outstanding grade in its last Ofsted inspection in 2014.

Following a BA in history and theology at Durham University, Shelagh spent six years as an officer in the Women’s Royal Army Corps.
