Brownies, Cubs and Scouts across the UK were asked to create a brand new cupcake for the French patisserie and boulangerie, with music as their inspiration and theme.

Ten-year-old Joseph Harris, a member of Funtington and West Stoke Scout Group, was announced as national winner at Chichester’s Maison Blanc, in South Street, this morning.

Joseph, a pupil at Bosham Primary School, was presented with his cake designs specially made by Maison Blanc chief patissier Alexandre Gresset, who judged the competition.

Rachel Maynard, Cub Scout leader, said: “The children thought very carefully about flavour combinations and exciting decorative ideas.

“It’s been such a lovely project to work on and to have the national winner come from the Chichester Scout District is fantastic. We were very proud of the way all the Scouts approached the task and their entries into the competition were all winners in my eyes.”

Mr Gresset was looking for an innovative and eye-catching design with an appealing flavour combination.

Joseph’s winning cupcake, The Lemon and Marshmallow Cake, has a lemon drizzle sponge and lemon zest buttercream, decorated with mini marshmallows, small white chocolate musical notes and a chocolate keyboard.

Mr Gresset said he was so impressed with the regional winning designs that he made the cakes as a one-off for the children, so they could see their creations brought to life and have the opportunity to taste their finished products.

Joseph’s cake, whoever, will also go into production and be sold in all Maison Blanc stores from Saturday for two weeks.

The competition was part of a partnership with music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins, which is dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people, and profits from Joseph’s cakes will go to the charity.

Chichester shop manager Stephane Boiron said: “The designs from the Chichester Scouts have been brilliant. It was really hard to choose a winner as they were all of such a high calibre.

“Huge congratulations to Joseph. I can vouch that this cake doesn’t just look amazing, it tastes delicious too.”
