Chichester Gala to return this summer

The historic Chichester Gala will take place again through the city this July, it has just been confirmed.

Chichester City Council’s community affairs committee has given approval for a gala procession to take place on Saturday, July 9 celebrating the ‘Best of British’.

The event was founded by Leslie Evershed-Martin in 1954 as a celebration for the city’s residents to enjoy themselves and raise money for charities.

The city council organised a very popular gala in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee, but the event has not been held since 2014.

A Chichester City Council spokesman said: “This year there will a Royal focus but we also have events going on in outer space, so for 2016, the theme is ‘Best of British’.

“Whilst floats have been a centrepiece of gala processions of old, there were many walking groups in the 2012 gala procession – all will be made welcome.”

The city council has a limited budget for the event, so is looking for sponsors and supporters - anything from a horticultural nursery to grow the cornflowers, marching bands, a good supply of hand waving Union Flags for the crowd, big television screens or even Portaloos.

The gala will coincide with another event taking place on July 9, the annual Summer Garden Party at Graylingwell Park.

The summer party will be held from 11.30am to 4.30pm and will be run in partnership with the scouts and the Chichester Community Development Trust.

New attractions this year include a market, a children’s activity village, and music running throughout the day, as well as the annual favourites of the dog show, scouts activities, fish and chips and barbecue.

The free event will again raise money for local good causes and offer a great day out for all the family.
